Pain wherever it may occur in the body can be caused and sustained by unresolved muscular tension in the intra vertebra joints. The problem is complicated where the tension results in nerve compression. Identifying and releasing hidden muscular tensions can remove the cause of many difficult and obscure pains. Turn for the Better is a form of self mobilisation involving the use of pressure points alongside the spine and can release the muscular tension behind most complex, multi level spinal seizures, even after years of pain. It is done simply, safely, and with no sudden movements, relieving many persistent pains, and allowing the body’s natural healing to be restored.
During the diagnostic phase, the massage therapist applies thumb pressure to opposite sides of the spinous processes of a pair of vertebra and by feeling the amount of movement that this causes, identifies the joints that are locked. The therapist then mobilises the joint by applying a higher and more sustained pressure to the pair of vertebra in a way that will cause the tense muscles to relax. The patient helps in this process by turning their hips to one side. As the tension reduces, the body will naturally move the spine into a better alignment - the "Turn for the Better" technique. When all of the affected joints have been released in this way, mobility is restored to the whole spine and the body's natural healing processes can work to reduce the overall tension in the spine leading to the reduction and eventual elimination of the pain. The Turn for the Better technique does not use high velocity or “click” type manipulation but aims to “mobilise” the joint, restoring movement without exceeding their normal range of travel. The principles involved are similar to elements found in the “Dorn Technique” and aspects of “Rolfing”. For further details contact David Allen, Remedial Therapy. |
